An Essex County jury awarded more than $2 million to a former dental student against the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) for wrongfully expelling him. Jason Vladimer was a top student at UMDNJ and close to graduation when the UMDNJ arbitrarily expelled him from the school without due process. Testimony at trial indicated various reasons for Vladimer's expulsion, including an incident where Vladimer cut the lip of a dental patient while using a clamp and drill. Vladimer argued that he was never given sufficient notice of the school's grounds for expulsion was never given a chance to defend himself. The expulsion cost Vladimer his career and he is now pursuing a different career. The jury agreed with Vladimer and awarded him $2 million in total economic loss and $25,000 for emotional distress.
